Healthy cooking with children - not so difficult at all

A freshly prepared healthy meal nourishes not only the body, but also the soul. But fast food, chips and sweets are popular. Many children and adolescents already suffer from obesity. The cause lies in an insufficient knowledge of the food, its preparation and lack of time for the common meal with the family. In recent years, indifference, ignorance and irresponsibility have led thousands and thousands of young people to have no or a disturbed relationship with food. Industrially highly processed food, excess fat and sweets and food full of chemical additives - these careless and unhealthy eating habits must be stopped. Because every child, regardless of social origin or nationality, has a right to a healthy start in life. As a society, we are obliged to give it this chance! At the same time, we return our respect to nature and farm animals with a conscious diet.

In order to avoid health risks and long-term consequences such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, a number of campaigns and alliances have been launched in recent years. These include the charitable Sarah Wiener Foundation in Germany. Through projects at schools and kindergartens as well as through educational work, the foundation aims to help children, adolescents and adults regain control over a self-determined, healthy diet. Teachers and educators are trained to become so-called "ambassadors" in order to multiply the concerns and knowledge and pass them on to the children. In this way, a nationwide network of ambassadors is gradually being established in the institutions that run the Sarah Wiener cooking and nutrition courses. In the courses the children learn what healthy food is, how it is prepared, how it tastes and what enjoyment means. Regional, seasonal and organic foods are used, which protect the environment. By visiting an "organic farm" children get an insight into the production and processing of the food. While the noises and smells remain in memory, the homemade butter lands directly on the bread slices. In this way, the foundation ensures that children discover the incredible variety of fresh foods and vitamins and learn to shape their eating habits in a sustainable and healthy way. Fun is also part of the whole thing when the cooking schools snip, chop, cook and season to taste.

Four tips for a better kids' meal

  1. Buy more consciously and show your children where the food comes from.
  2. Cook and bake more yourself. Only then will you know what's inside.
  3. Cook together with your children. There is always something that the little ones can take over.
  4. Eat together regularly.
